Autumn is the time of the year when leaves fall and anticipations rise for family get-togethers over the holidays. The air begins to get crisp and the leaves begin to change to an elegant blend of yellow, orange and brown. While the animals are preparing for winter by collecting enough food to last until spring, we are busy enjoying the remaining months of the year by heading outdoors and reaping the benefits of fall.

 Fall is race season

With the hot and humid weather diminishing, the fall is a popular time of the year for many to compete in organized races. Though most of your training might be done in the summer, the fall is your time to showcase your hard work and dedication. Whether you are competing against the clock, a friend or just running for fun, signing up for a competition is a great way to stay focused on your training plan and keep a personal long-term goal. If you are looking for a local race, Active.com is a database of events that you can use as a resource to find a race that’s right for you. If you are looking to get involved in the community at USLI, the Running Club offers group runs and training programs that you can follow to meet your goals.

Map out a new and exciting trail

The changing leaves and cool air make fall one of the most beautiful times of the year to go for a hike. Make sure that you prepare for the hike by mapping it out ahead of time, bringing plenty of food and water and wearing the proper attire, such as hiking or trail shoes. You can take advantage of certain apps on your phone that list popular hiking trails near you or you can create a custom trail based on your location. Popular apps include Yonder, AllTrail, and MapmyHike.

Fresh fall produce

Apples, brussel sprouts, squash, pumpkins and sweet potatoes are just a few of the nutrient-dense foods that are freshest in the fall. Instead of adding the packaged or canned ingredients to a pie or other dessert, try buying the produce fresh at the store and adding a few spices for flavor. Many of the fall produce is also cheaper in season, so there is no excuse to try a new treat.

Fun activities for the family and friends

If you are looking for a new adventure, you can always travel to your closest farm and indulge in one of their themed programs. Many farms offer apple and pumpkin picking, corn mazes, hay rides and pumpkin/apple chucking. These activities may not seem like a significant addition to your wellness goals, but studies show that any time you spend up and moving, rather than sitting, is extremely beneficial to your health.  Standing for just one-fourth of your day can significantly reduce your risk for certain diseases, including heart disease!

Fall Recreational Sports League

The fall sports season also offers many opportunities to compete in various sport leagues around town. Express your inner athlete by getting together nights or weekends to play flag football, field hockey, soccer or lacrosse. You can find leagues online that also offer an extra social aspect to your life. Participating in fall leagues can reduce stress levels and increase dopamine, the feel-good chemical, created in the body. USLI also offers recreation leagues for every season. You can find the list of them on the Slainte website under Rec Sports Leagues.
