A fitness journey doesn’t have be a journey you take alone. While some may enjoy chasing their fitness goals solo, research shows there are benefits of working out with a buddy or a group, even if it’s just a workout or two a week.
The benefits of working out with others include increased accountability, socialization, competition and motivation. For example, if you struggle with consistency, committing to meeting someone to work out is a great way to overcome that struggle and stay accountable. If you commit to someone, you won’t want to let them down!
Socialization can lighten your mood, promote feelings of safety and belonging, and allow you to develop meaningful relationships — so why not combine exercise with socialization and reap all the benefits? Joining an exercise class is a great way to get to know new people and gain positive physical and mental benefits.
Lastly, working out with others promotes competition and motivation. Being in the presence of others allows everyone involved to motivate each other with words and actions. Cheering others on or watching someone crush their workout can be a great motivator to push yourself past self-imposed limitations. A Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology study found that people who performed a plank with a partner held the plank longer than when they planked alone. What’s more, individuals who worked out with someone of a higher fitness level saw the greatest improvement.
Whatever you are chasing — accountability, socialization, competition or motivation — you can find many ways to work out with others this month and get closer to your fitness goals.
