Working out and moving on your own is great, but it can be challenging sometimes. One way to encourage yourself to stay on track with your fitness goals is to have a workout buddy.

The biggest advantage of having a workout buddy is the built-in accountability. You’re less likely to skip a workout when you know someone else is depending on you. Your workout buddy can be someone you work with, a neighbor, a family member, a spouse or a friend. It’s important to find someone you can connect with on a regular basis, whether in person or on the phone. This buddy should be encouraging and even have similar goals as you.

There are so many opportunities for you to get moving with your workout buddy. Here are four ideas:

  1. Go for a walk or run: Enjoy a nice indoor or outdoor walk while catching up. Walking is even great for long-distance workout buddies; you can chat on the phone while you strut!
  2. Resistance training: Resistance training is a fun way to socialize and can be done in several ways. Try a partner workout, or allow one person to rest while the other performs their repetitions.
  3. Cycling: Grab your bikes and hit the trail together.
  4. Try a new group exercise class: Get out of your comfort zone and try something new. Having the added support and camaraderie can make it less scary and even more fun.

Having a buddy to work out with is not only important for the benefit of staying active, but it gives you an opportunity to socialize. Whether it’s weekly or monthly, having time to exercise, talk and simply spend time together will positively impact your mental, physical and emotional health.

This week, buddy up and see how it makes you feel!
