Did you know Daylight Savings Time was originally put into effect by Benjamin Franklin as a way to conserve energy? He expected that longer hours of natural light in the evening would lead to less energy needed to brighten homes. Since its creation, Daylight Savings Time has encouraged more than just energy conservation — it has also led to an increase in exercise and outdoor activities in the evening.

Statistics show the extra hour of sunlight in the summer increases mental, physical and emotional health. But why? Let’s review just how amazing sunlight is and five key benefits it provides for our health:

1. It encourages better sleeping habits.
Melatonin is a chemical in our brains that lulls us into a restful sleep. Our bodies naturally secrete melatonin as it gets darker, but natural sunlight increases the regulation of melatonin, leading to better sleeping habits. Melatonin regulation also helps to decrease stress levels.

2. It increases vitamin D absorption.
Vitamin D is an important contributor to bone strength, health and overall immunity. It is also a very hard vitamin to obtain from food alone. The sun is the best natural source of vitamin D, and it only takes about 5 to 15 minutes in the sun a few times a week for your body to absorb enough. As always, when outdoors, make sure you are protecting your skin with broad-spectrum (UVA-UVB) SPF 15+ sunscreen.

3. It enhances your overall mood.
The sun helps to increase serotonin levels, which are natural mood boosters. Higher serotonin levels can decrease anxiety, increase motivation and alleviate the symptoms of seasonal depression someone might experience during colder, darker months.

4. It lowers blood pressure.
When sunlight hits your skin, your body releases something called nitric oxide into your blood. Nitric oxide lowers blood pressure and improves heart health. Boosting your happiness and lowering stress by stepping outside and soaking up the sun’s rays can also aid in keeping your blood pressure down.

5. It increases health and motivates you to move.
Warm months naturally encourage you to get outside and move. You may find yourself exercising more or participating in more outdoor activities, like walking, running, biking, swimming or playing sports. This physical activity causes you to become healthier and stronger, decreasing your risk for illness or disease. The motivation to eat healthier is also elevated, providing your body with more natural vitamins and minerals.

The sun is an incredible source of health for us, but how can we enjoy it?

As stated above, in order to absorb the right amount of vitamin D, it is important to stay outside for 5 to 15 minutes at least a few times a week. During that time, you can go for a walk, run, play with your kids or dog in the yard, or just simply sit and enjoy the peaceful sounds of the outdoors.

As this summer begins, think about the fun outdoor activities you enjoy or those you have always wanted to try. Kayak down a local river, lake or ocean; hike to enjoy a perfect view of the sunrise; or grow a beautiful garden with fresh vegetables and fruit.

Whatever you choose to do, always make sure you have your sunscreen on. Though the sun has some very clear health benefits, UV rays can be strong and harmful if you are overexposed.

Get outside, and enjoy!
