“You should think of your energy as if it’s expensive, as if it’s like a luxury item. Not everyone can afford it.” — Taylor Swift
Your energy is a renewable resource, but have you ever considered what people, actions or daily habits deplete it versus refill it? Understanding your energy givers and drainers can help you make better choices about how to spend your time and care for yourself.
Energy givers are those magical people, habits and moments that provide mental, physical, emotional or social boosts. These power boosts fill your cup and help you be your best self.
Examples include:
- Quality sleep
- Spending time in nature
- Exercise and movement
- Proper hydration and electrolyte balance
- Nutritious meals and snacks
- Focused work (not multitasking)
- Creative or brain-stimulating activities
- Decluttering one or more spaces
- Time with supportive and uplifting people
- Expressing gratitude
- Laughter
- Meditation, prayer or journaling
Energy drainers, on the other hand, can deplete you without your awareness. The more you notice them, the better you can limit their impact.
Examples include:
- Lack of sleep
- Skipped or unhealthy meals
- Excess sugar or caffeine
- Poor posture
- Too much sedentary time
- Dehydration or electrolyte imbalance
- Overthinking or rumination
- Multitasking
- Excess screen time or doom scrolling
- Clutter or disorganization
- Perfectionism
- Toxic relationships
- Negative self-talk
- Overcommitting yourself
Your energy is one of your most valuable resources. Guard it!
This week, ask yourself:
- What energy givers can I add more of?
- What energy drainers can I limit or release?
Commit to two or three actions this week to protect your energy. You’re worth it!
