For a long time, scientists believed that you were born with the same number of brain cells you would die with. However, we now know that brain cells continue to grow throughout your life, a process called neurogenesis. Neurogenesis is the formation of new neuron cells in the brain. There are many different types of neuron cells, each playing an important role in various parts of the brain, such as the hippocampus, with specialized functions. It is also believed that to keep these neurons active and working, we need to continue challenging our brains throughout our lives.

So, how can we do this? A healthy lifestyle is associated with neurogenesis. Getting enough sleep, eating well and exercising all contribute to the growth of new brain cells. Additionally, learning new skills or trying unfamiliar activities leads to beneficial changes in the adult brain.  Equally important are social connections. Being socially engaged with family, friends or others helps prevent isolation and depression, which can lead to cognitive decline.

Here are some suggestions for stimulating your brain:

  • Try a new type of exercise class
  • Take up a new sport
  • Take a class: painting, cooking, yoga or flower arranging
  • Be social: Meet a friend for a walk or a coffee
  • If you go for walks, take a different route
  • Explore an unfamiliar area nearby
  • Learn a new language
  • Read a book
  • Play an instrument
  • Write in a journal
  • Cook or try a new recipe
  • Listen to a different type of music
  • Use your non-dominant hand to brush your hair or teeth
  • Try daily puzzles or games like Sudoku, crossword puzzles or other word games

Even small changes, like switching your usual spot on the couch or changing your daily parking spot, can stimulate your brain and keep those neurons developing. There are so many ways to stay engaged with the world around you. People of all ages can benefit from adding a few simple brain exercises to their daily routine. Boost your memory, concentration and focus, and keep your brain healthy no matter your age.
